We read with joy this text in which for the first time - as far as we know - the spirituality of communion has been spelt out and described in a direct and explicit way. The spirituality of communion is the core of our research, the meaning of our pastoral proposals, the horizon towards which we strive. It has been summarised in the COMMUNITARIAN EXERCISES (retreat of the Christian community) that had their origin in Fr. Lombardi SJ (1908-1979). We would like now to describe our way of understanding and promoting this spirituality.
IT IS THE SPIRITUALITY OF TRINITARIAN COMMUNION LIVED AND CO-LIVED AS PEOPLE OF GOD, IN A GIVEN TIME AND SPACE (LOCAL CHURCH), AT THE SERVICE OF THE EXTENSION OF THE REIGN OF GOD IN THE WORLD
It is the communion that stems from God-Father’s design to communicate God’s own life and love to all human beings, through Christ, so that all who believe in Christ, gathered together in the Church by the Spirit, might live and share God’s love and witness to it to the world. It is the logic of communion as spelt out in the first and second chapters of “Lumen Gentium”: to let ourselves be reached by God’s love and to communicate and inter-communicate this love, as people of God: a people that is ‘belongs’ to God and God who is ‘of a people’, for the renewal and transformation of the world. It is for this that the people of God share in the threefold function of Christ. Trinitarian communion therefore is:
- an event to be perceived and contemplated in history (prophetic dimension);
- a vocation to be developed in holiness/universal unity, so that the world might believe (priestly dimension);
- a mission/witness to discharge in building up the Church community, for the extension of God’s Reign in the world (royal or servant dimension).
